STELLAR Second Life Chat 2/13/18

 [18:49] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Hello!

[18:50] Marylin Monroe (imanta.hammerer): Good evening!

[18:50] Peggy Marconi (ruby.flanagan): Mi Mary, I am need to log out, be right back.  May have to download Sl.

[18:50] emasmith101: hello!

[18:50] Marylin Monroe (imanta.hammerer): NP

[18:50] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): OK

[18:53] Rachachelle: To the left of this chat I see green speaker looking things. Are people talking or just typing?

[18:55] Vitaut Arabello: An important thing to remember: to depress the speak button when not talking.

[18:55] banducinni: Love that horse

[18:56] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Hi all. If you haven't "friended" me, yet. You're welcome to do so. It makes it easier for me to help you if you're in a jam!

[18:56] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Welcome back, Peggy!

[18:56] banducinni: I wish I had a horse

[18:56] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): My kingdom for a horse!

[18:57] Vitaut Arabello: :-)

[18:57] Vitaut Arabello: $$

[18:58] Vitaut Arabello: Always funny is to have money :-)

[18:58] phbillies5: How do I sit in the chair again?

[18:58] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Several of us are chatting. If you can't hear anything, we should start troubleshooting that, now. Let me or Ulad know if you can't hear.

[18:58] tmeinzen: I would rather go backward.

[18:58] Rachachelle: So where would one begin to trouble shoot it?

[18:58] phbillies5: Thank you!

[18:59] banducinni: you want us to sit or stand?

[18:59] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Rachachelle, can you not hear?

[18:59] vdavis360: I keep getting a message that I don't have permission to use this viewer. It says to click the lock on the side of the screen, but I don't see a lock. I can hear you.

[18:59] tmeinzen: I can hear Mary

[18:59] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): :)

[18:59] tmeinzen: Sorry I can hear Peggy

[18:59] Marylin Monroe (imanta.hammerer): Rachachelle, we can Skype you and you will be hearing everything.

[19:00] Marylin Monroe (imanta.hammerer): What is your Skype?

[19:00] tmeinzen: I am looking at the scene

[19:00] betade3: I do not hear anything?????

[19:00] dkbillie: I can hear typing but not voices.

[19:00] vdavis360: Okay, that sounds good. Yes, I can see the screen. Thanks! Valerie

[19:00] tmeinzen: I am hearing voices

[19:00] ecdanna: Thank you for paying me!

[19:00] betade3: Typing and no voices

[19:01] Inga  PHHS (iperham3): I would rather work more hours per day but fewer days per week because I would like to have a few more days each week to recharge my battery.

[19:01] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): If you are having trouble hearing (you should have heard talking by now)

[19:01] emasmith101: so are we supposed to answer the questions here?

[19:01] Vitaut Arabello: When asked.

[19:01] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): First, Quit out of Second Life and try logging back in.

[19:01] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): We can try other things if that doesn't work.

[19:01] toddgrassman (tgrassman): I can hear

[19:01] Inga  PHHS (iperham3): I can hear.

[19:01] phbillies5: I can hear

[19:01] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): I can hear

[19:01] tmeinzen: I can hear

[19:02] thompsontheterrible: I can hear

[19:02] emasmith101: I can hear

[19:02] Vitaut Arabello: I can hear

[19:02] banducinni: I can hear

[19:02] ecdanna: I would rather speak all foreign languages because it would be easier to travel and communicate with everyone.

[19:02] vdavis360: I can hear.

[19:02] betade3: When I first opened it something came up about my speaker not working and checking firewall???

[19:02] ecdanna: I can hear

[19:02] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): I would rather work more hours a day, but fewer days in a week.

[19:02] phbillies5: I would rather work fewer days but longer days than more days with less hours because then I would have more time for family.

[19:03] banducinni: 4 school days a week would do that

[19:03] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Betade3, that sounds like a tech problem your school IT will need to fix. For tonight, stay in 2L, but call my cell and I'll patch you in through my speaker. 541-543-7054

[19:03] Marylin Monroe (imanta.hammerer): So, I am Skyping to those who cannot hear. Just tell me your phone numbers.

[19:03] vdavis360: I agree with Amanda and Inga; definitely longer hours on fewer days. A 4 day week would be awesome!

[19:03] Marylin Monroe (imanta.hammerer): OK. Thank you, mary.

[19:03] thompsontheterrible: I would rather work more hours per day

[19:03] Marylin Monroe (imanta.hammerer): Mary

[19:03] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Thanks, Ulad! MRILYN MONROE IS ONE OF ULAD'S AVATARS.

[19:03] tmeinzen: I would rather go into the past than go into the future because the past is done. The future could be scary.

[19:03] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Oops! allc aps

[19:03] Rachachelle: So I can hear now, but only without headphones. I just used these headphones minutes before so I know they are working

[19:04] banducinni: I worked at Oakland for a year. They did 4 day school weeks and we worked every other Friday. Had our PLC, staff meetings those Fridays. Amazing!

[19:04] phbillies5: Sounds great!

[19:04] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): sounds awesome

[19:04] emasmith101: I would rather talk to animals than speak all foreign languages for two reasons. One I have always wanted to communicate with animals to let them know not to be scared in scary times, or to hear what they actually do all day. And two I have always wondered if animals had accents like people.

[19:05] banducinni: Speaking to animals would be epic.

[19:05] Marylin Monroe (imanta.hammerer): Video is being filmed!

[19:05] betade3: I can hear now, but now it says I do not have permission to view the screen.

[19:05] Vitaut Arabello: ???

[19:05] phbillies5: Can you speak a little louder Peggy please?

[19:05] Vitaut Arabello: I will change the slides, can you see it?

[19:05] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Nicola,

[19:06] betade3: Yes, now I can

[19:06] tmeinzen: You are welcome

[19:06] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): hover over Peggy's avatar to see her personal volume and turn it up.

[19:06] betade3: Resources are on the screen,  now the screen is blurry again.

[19:06] phbillies5: Thank you!

[19:06] toddgrassman (tgrassman): I would rather have more time than money because I enjoy my time with friends, family, hobbies, and activities like this where I can become a better teacher.

[19:06] Jmacrae: have more time

[19:06] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Betade3, you might have a slow internet connection. Call me if you want to troubleshoot. 541-543-7054

[19:07] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Nicola, did that work?

[19:07] Rachachelle: I want to meet my ancestors. In reality I would love to spend more time with my great grandma but I would have loved to know her sister as well.

[19:07] phbillies5: yes thank you

[19:07] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): My beagle is joining us. She isn't so sure about the mystery voices she's hearing.

[19:07] Presenter Yoon enlarged: You do not have permission to use this viewer.

[19:07] Presenter Yoon enlarged: You may request permission from the owner, by clicking the lock on the side of the screen.

[19:07] betade3: It says I do not have permission to use this viewer.  I can request permission by clicking the lock at the side of the screen.  Still looking for the lock.

[19:08] toddgrassman (tgrassman): Although having more money would make my time  with friends, family and hobbies more interesting!

[19:08] betade3: I don't see a lock on the side of the screen

[19:08] Jmacrae: On the other hand, I know money can give me travel, although if I have no time I still would not enjoy it.

[19:08] Vitaut Arabello: Ah, no! It is done intentionally. Sorry.

[19:08] TamiBloom (twentybuck7): Wahoo! Made it to the site and found a chair with no problems.

[19:09] phbillies5: On the other hands, fewer hours a day is nice because we have more evening time at home.

[19:09] betade3: My screen is blurry

[19:09] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): On the other hand working less hours in a day still gives me time off. So, the upshot is that no matter how many hours I work, I still get weekends off. (Most of the time!)

[19:09] Inga  PHHS (iperham3): On the other hand I could work a few hours each day and find better ways to spend my evenings. The upshot of all this is that it is the contrast of work to rest that makes life special.

[19:09] banducinni: I would rather travel and work with my family around the world than work and live here because my son, husband, and myself would be educated in many cultures.

[19:09] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): ISometimes a screen will be blurry when internet speed is slow. It should fix itself

[19:09] Vitaut Arabello: Blurry screen for a couple of seconds is OK, takes time to develop.

[19:09] Lori Barrong (lbarrong): I would much rather have more time than money!

[19:09] betade3: It stays blurry the whole time

[19:09] banducinni: On the other hand, I would want my family to have close friends and traveling constantly would affect that.

[19:10] vdavis360: On the other hand, I would be more tired after a longer day; therefore it might not be worth the sacrifice on those 4 long days.

[19:10] emasmith101: on the other hand talking to animals might create a headache since there are so many. So, I woul want to be able to turn it on and off like Dolittle.

[19:10] Rachachelle: I would rather work longer days but less days. I too used to have 4 day school weeks with longer days. There was never a problem fitting all the to-dos into the the day. On the other hand, students who needed structure struggled coming back from 3 day weekends. That made for LONG Mondays.

[19:10] Jmacrae: The upshot of all this is that I would like to have a modicum of money so I could fill my time with travel.

[19:10] ecdanna: On the other hand, talking to animals would be interesting because then you would know how they are feeling. The upshot of all this is that I can still travel with my pets!

[19:10] thompsontheterrible: Although I could work less hours per day and more days per week.  The upshot of all this is that I could spend more of my days doing small meaningful activities. They say

[19:11] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): I love Writing into the Day!

[19:12] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): i have mastered napping!

[19:12] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): LOL zzzzzzz

[19:12] phbillies5: I enjoy hiking.

[19:12] banducinni: I love playing soccer. I've thought of starting an indoor PHES/PHHS indoor team.

[19:12] emasmith101: I love to ook

[19:12] emasmith101: cook

[19:13] vdavis360: I love to ride my bicycle.

[19:13] tmeinzen: I would rather go back into the past rather than forward to the future. Although meeting the future would be useful for the present. The upshot of all this is that I would enjoy either possibility.

[19:13] Vitaut Arabello: Love hiking.

[19:13] Lori Barrong (lbarrong): I love making lists! Organization!

[19:14] ecdanna: I love playing soccer also but havent' had the chance to play in a while

[19:17] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): They say by 2020, all known knowledge will double every 75 minutes!

[19:18] Vitaut Arabello: No escape...

[19:19] Jmacrae: Mary, that sounds exhausting.  I will be a little old lady reading hardbacks.

[19:19] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): We can read them together! I can't even wrap my mind around this notion.

[19:20] Vitaut Arabello: Well, not all knowledge is actually vital :-) It will hold in 2020 and it holds today.

[19:22] betade3: Will we have access to these slides later?

[19:22] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Yes, all slides will be available.

[19:23] TamiBloom (twentybuck7): Can anyone tell me if our online discussion will be available to review later on a youtube video?

[19:23] Vitaut Arabello: Sure! I am filming the session and both the video and the presentation will be embedded on in a few days.

[19:23] Jmacrae: I use I say they say in Wr 121.  They are good at practicing, but less adept at putting the moves in their argument papers.

[19:23] TamiBloom (twentybuck7): Sweet! I figured you might be. I'd like to come back through and take better notes.

[19:24] Vitaut Arabello: More exactly, here:

[19:26] toddgrassman (tgrassman): I have used the VTS language a little in reading comprehension groups.

[19:26] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Todd, I'd like to hear more about that!

[19:26] toddgrassman (tgrassman): Students will give an answer to a question, and I will reply with what did you see in the text that made you say that?

[19:27] emasmith101: we used it a little today too Todd in my science lesson!

[19:27] TamiBloom (twentybuck7): Todd, I've done several VTS lessons from my "Crime and Puzzlement" book which my kids love! I've tried to stick closer to the exact questions.

[19:27] Vitaut Arabello: For video, one should just click on the plate.

[19:27] banducinni: want us to click on the watch video?

[19:28] TamiBloom (twentybuck7): Crime and Puzzlement has several books that are really cheap (around $5) on Amamzon

[19:28] TamiBloom (twentybuck7): *Amazon

[19:28] banducinni: click on iy now?

[19:28] toddgrassman (tgrassman): I will check into it.

[19:28] Vitaut Arabello: Yes, please. Either your default browser or built-in browser will open.

[19:28] Vitaut Arabello: Of course.

[19:28] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): nothing is happening when i click

[19:29] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): got it

[19:29] Vitaut Arabello: There must be a request "Go to...?"

[19:29] Vitaut Arabello: "Go to page". One must press to confirm.

[19:29] Vitaut Arabello: OK.

[19:30] banducinni: back

[19:30] phbillies5: back

[19:30] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): I'm back

[19:30] emasmith101: back

[19:30] Vitaut Arabello: Welcome back!

[19:30] Rachachelle: back

[19:31] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): back

[19:31] betade3: i'm back

[19:31] Lori Barrong (lbarrong): back

[19:31] vdavis360: back

[19:31] TamiBloom (twentybuck7): I'm back too

[19:31] toddgrassman (tgrassman): back

[19:31] thompsontheterrible: I too am back

[19:31] ecdanna: back

[19:31] Jmacrae: back

[19:32] tmeinzen: I am back

[19:33] Jmacrae: That is how I start R and J too!

[19:34] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): I'm listening

[19:36] tmeinzen: What is R and J Jan?

[19:36] Vitaut Arabello: I wanted to ask, too.

[19:36] tmeinzen: Oh, Romeo and Juliet. Got it.

[19:36] Vitaut Arabello: Ah.

[19:37] Jmacrae: Yes .  I start with the Chorus, but I didn't use VTS, but more the journalistic, who, what, when, why, and i will do VTS with my 9th graders this year.

[19:37] Jmacrae: oh and where

[19:40] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Oh my. This is such a precious exchange. You can just hear the sense of community and collegiality. This, to me, is the power of Second Life PD!

[19:40] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): You're welcome. :)

[19:40] Vitaut Arabello: Done.

[19:41] Vitaut Arabello: Yes, it is!

[19:41] tmeinzen: Can we get a copy of these slides as a reminder?

[19:41] Vitaut Arabello: Three of them.

[19:41] Vitaut Arabello: Will be embedded here:

[19:41] Vitaut Arabello: Both today's video and presentation as such, downloadable.

[19:43] Jmacrae: Thanks.

[19:43] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Reading is thinking and writing is inking your thinking

[19:43] betade3: just lost the sound.  Is this true for anyone else?

[19:43] Jmacrae: no  ok

[19:44] betade3: ok now

[19:44] phbillies5: I didn't lose sound. Sorry

[19:44] Vitaut Arabello: I still can hear.

[19:45] TamiBloom (twentybuck7): I have been having discussions with some of my colleagues about how our students are really struggling with their writing; that they cannot get their ideas on paper. I am really hoping that these 10+ lesson will help build their writing skills and their upcomng teachers can tell a difference.

[19:45] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): 10 complete lessons or 10 pictures total?

[19:46] phbillies5: I wondered the same as Amanda.

[19:46] TamiBloom (twentybuck7): Our kiddos live a world of snapchat and twitter with a cap of 140 characters. They personally don't see the point of putting MORE on paper.

[19:46] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): Sad

[19:47] TamiBloom (twentybuck7): Right!!??

[19:47] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Tami, many kids find the value of their voice when they do VTS and have mroe to say.

[19:47] phbillies5: True

[19:47] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): more

[19:48] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): Okay. Thank you for the clarity!

[19:48] Jmacrae: It may end up being the communication of the future.  Maybe artful writing will pass away?

[19:48] tmeinzen: Thanks!

[19:49] Vitaut Arabello: Magic number?

[19:49] Vitaut Arabello: Here it is!

[19:49] Lori Barrong (lbarrong): Even in 2nd grade sometimes students struggle with putting their ideas on paper or feeling brave enough to say what they are thinking.  Hopefully using VTS will get them to a place where they can feel confident in expressing their thoughts! And of course be able to go a little further in depth on their thoughts/reasoning by listening to each other!

[19:49] Jmacrae: I am thinking it will be classist in the future.  But we should focus on not making that happen.

[19:49] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Maybe, with more access to computers, it will become less classist?

[19:50] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Access to publishing their thoughts, I mean.

[19:50] TamiBloom (twentybuck7): Yes! Listening and respecting others "claims and evidence"

[19:50] emasmith101: have you ever done a vts lesson with kid art before?

[19:50] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Lori, I have some suggestions for getting priary students to write.

[19:50] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): primary

[19:50] Rachachelle: I have. It worked well

[19:51] Jmacrae: The idea of doing it with kid art is teaching them the workshop message which I love.

[19:51] emasmith101: I am thinking it might act as a good warm up

[19:51] Lori Barrong (lbarrong): Thank you, Mary!

[19:51] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): :)

[19:51] toddgrassman (tgrassman): Do you recommend having students write down their thinking after VTS lessons often?  We wrote for the pre-assessment, but only held discussions for the two images we did after this.

[19:53] TamiBloom (twentybuck7): I might try and have them write something, like Peggy said, at least a paragraph after each lesson. I'd like to do one of the lessons into a larger paper, but after we've had some real VTS practice.

[19:53] Jmacrae: I get journaling.  But I don't have time for it in high school for the most part.

[19:57] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): I've been surprised by what the kinders have come up with while looking at the images. One thought a little girl had cancer because she had short hair last week and today in a different picture they brought up transgender.

[19:57] phbillies5: Where do we find crime and puzzlement content?

[19:57] phbillies5: Where do we find crime and puzzlement content?

[19:57] TamiBloom (twentybuck7): I learned in our kickoff day to avoid doing landscapes for VTS

[19:57] tmeinzen: Transgender in kindergarten? Whoa.

[19:58] emasmith101: thats is what i was wondering

[19:58] tmeinzen: Why no landscapes?

[19:58] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow):

[19:58] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): by Hillock

[19:58] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): Yep. A person was wearing a dress but had very short hair and they thought the person could be transgender.

[19:58] emasmith101: did you say you had one of those Todd?

[19:59] phbillies5: Thank you Peggy! That would be great!

[19:59] toddgrassman (tgrassman): No, it was recommended to me in the chat.

 [19:59] emasmith101: yes thank you!

[19:59] emasmith101: gotcha

[19:59] Rachachelle: My kids thought that was a female body with a male head. and they were marrying themselves. One girl was mad about it and the other might be the flower girl.

[19:59] Jmacrae: Glad they know the word transgender=progress

[20:00] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Peggy plans to talk more about types of images to choose in the future. :)

[20:00] Rachachelle: I tried stellar stellar today. no luck

[20:00] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): Last week, with the girl with the bird, they were all about how she shouldn't be holding the bird because it is a wild animal.

[20:00] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Try STELLAR all caps for the password

[20:00] Rachachelle: all caps for the username too?

[20:00] Jmacrae: Amanda,  that's cute.  I like that .

[20:01] vdavis360: We have our spot reserved!

[20:01] Rachachelle: I tried lowercase and the first letter cap.

[20:01] emasmith101: do you know if we can reserve a spot for the fall?

[20:01] Jmacrae: Ha ha.  Rachachelle.  That is fun.  My kids are ore reserved.

[20:01] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): I'm happy to set up a date to meet in Second Life to help troubleshhot.

[20:02] Vitaut Arabello: Just tell us! and we will arrive to your school to help on-site with SL.

[20:02] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Just email me a request.

[20:02] Inga  PHHS (iperham3): Good Night All

[20:02] Jmacrae: bye

[20:02] betade3: What should we be working on if we are taking this for credit?

[20:03] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): night!

[20:03] thompsontheterrible: Thank you

[20:03] toddgrassman (tgrassman): Thanks, bye!

[20:03] emasmith101: wonderful thank peggy

[20:03] tmeinzen: Thanks Peggy and all, when is the next session?

[20:03] TamiBloom (twentybuck7): goodnight Peggy, thank you

[20:03] phbillies5: Thank you! Good Night.

[20:03] vdavis360: Thank you! Good night!

[20:03] ecdanna: Thank you, good night!

[20:03] Lori Barrong (lbarrong): Thank you!

[20:03] Vitaut Arabello: Mission accomplished! Thank you, Peggy, thanks everyone.

[20:03] tmeinzen: Notices are very good.

[20:03] banducinni: Night All!

[20:03] dkbillie: Thank you!

[20:03] Amanda McMichael (amandajeniece): I am taking it for credit. Thanks!

[20:03] tmeinzen: Good night. Inspired I am.

 [20:04] betade3: Thank you

[20:04] emasmith101: night all have a wonderful valentines day tomorrow!

[20:04] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Great evening, Peggy!

[20:04] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): Happy Oregon's birthday!

[20:04] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): 2/14/1859

[20:05] Mary Harwood (readwoody.ludlow): He isn't as old, I hope

[20:06] Ducky (bmccool): Thank you! Happy Valentine's Day!
